Here's why your new ways of working are not working
The New Ways of Working movement is starting to flounder.
It's easy to see why.
For too long it has prioritised a focus on people and practices.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
"We've never done more training or had more processes.
Everyone knows how to give and receive feedback.
I call my manager a coach.
We self-organise in learning circles and discuss tensions.
It's like therapy.
But it's still no easier to do my work.
Sometimes it's harder.
We're all up for doing great work and having a great place to work.
But wouldn't we get there faster if we just made it easier to do our jobs?"
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Better ways of working grow out of improving the work with the people who do the work.
They don't arrive in a playbook to implement.
We don't 'create the conditions' then improve the work.
We create the conditions by improving the work.
